The Father Behind 'David After Dentist'

Posted by:

To call David DeVore the man behind David After Dentist is true in almost every regard.

He was literally the man behind the camera, filming his son after a little too much "medicine" at the dentist's office, reminding David Jr. not to touch his stitches.

And as David's father, David Sr. was also a part of the biological creation of his son.  (We won't go into any further detail on that).

So though son is the star, father has been there every step of the way.

And since creating one of the most noteworthy viral videos in recent memory, David Sr. now runs the mini-empire that is the David After Dentist brand, selling merchandise, contributing to charities and arranging appearances on insanely awesome TV shows like Tosh.0.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, January 13th at 10:30pm / 9:30c, you can see both Davids on the season premiere of Tosh.0.  We asked older David about that experience and other parts of life after "David After Dentist."

See the Tosh.0 blog's exclusive interview after the jump…

MP:  How was it working with Daniel Tosh and Tosh.0?

DD: Which one was he?  Just kidding.  Daniel was great.  He needs to work out more though if he plans on dragging anymore middle aged, overweight dads around.  David even beat him in arm wrestling after we shot.

The staff was great.  Very nice.  Treated David and I like celebrities.

MP:  Do you think doing shows like Tosh.0 will cause David to catch the acting bug?

DD: Hes only 9, so who knows what the future holds for David.  I, however, have already signed up for an acting class at the local community college.  If Daniel can do it, why can't anybody?

MP:  Does David have much experience in front of the camera while not on drugs or does he prefer the Gary Busey approach?

DD: He prefers playing it straight.  We did get on TV during the Gators' National Championship game last year.

Has Busey done anything since Point Break?

MP:  What are some of your favorite viral videos?

DD: One of our favorite is "Chad After Dentist," the parody of ours.  We've become email friends with those guys at Blame Society.  Also, Charlie Bit My Finger… any of the kids videos.

MP:  What do you think about people making parodies or remixes of your video?

DD: It's kind of run the course.  At the beginning, you're like, Whoa these people are stealing our stuff. But then we realized it part of the YouTube culture.  It is a good thing, part of the process.  You think: This is cool.

Some of them we weren't exactly pleased with because it had to do with David.  We just didn't let him watch them.

MP:  Does David spend a lot of time online?  What is he watching?

DD: He really likes sports and the Florida Gators, looking at all the highlights and stuff like that.  He researches the different players.

MP:  Does David have any clue what's going on?  Does he think this is normal?

DD: He knows how unusual this is and thinks its cool.  It all seems to come natural to him.  He likes it when we get to go somewhere but is ready to focus on his regular life when we get back.  We are treating this like a family adventure.

MP:  Does he know who Andy Warhol is?

DD: Hes playing a video game, let me ask him…  He said no, who's asking and why?

MP:  What about his brother, William?  Some serious jealousy there?

DD: William is 4, is pretty highbrow for his age, thinks this is all beneath him.  However, to amuse us, he will tell us its an enjoyable waste of time.

MP:  Is David the most popular kid in school or does this lead to some serious beat-downs?

DD: He was already popular so this just reinforced that.  But he can handle his own if the need arises.  Ask Daniel, he will confirm that fact.

MP:  Do you think this will be a positive thing or a possible hindrance for David later in life?

DD: It's been all positive so far.  It hasn't changed who he is or who we are.  I don't see why that would change in the future.

MP:  How many T-shirts have you sold on davidafterdentist.com?  Seriously, what kind of dough you pulling in?

DD: Several thousand, so you do the math.  It's a kitchen table business so we all pitch in.  This has also allowed us to donate over $6,000 to different charities, including Operation Smile.

MP:  How did you get involved with Operation Smile?

DD: It was kind of a process we went through.  We wanted to have something charitable a little bit more specifically tied to the video.  We looked at some local charities.  But it was the quality of the organization.  They have a great reputation and it was just a fit.
