Album Covers Minus the Dead People

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | January 12, 2012 at 12:00PM

Here's a cool concept from a couple of Photoshop artists: What would classic album covers look like with only the surviving members?

The Beatles' Abbey Road seemed like the most accessible example.  But my personal favorite is T.Rex's Electric Warrior

It has an "Uh, he isn't coming out to play this show, is he?" vibe going on.

But the moral here is clear: musicians die younger than all of the rest of us.

Go to Live ! (I See Dead People) on Tumblr for the entire collection.

It's Monday and I'm Over It

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | March 14, 2011 at 12:00PM

On Friday afternoon, we postedabout the painfully awful Rebecca Black song, "Friday."

I'm on the Internet all week.  So when the weekend hits, I pull my router out of the wall and enter a two-day red wine and Valium-induced coma.  I ended my workweek by putting "Friday" on Facebook, I shut down my computer and that was that.

But the Internet keeps rolling while I snooze, and a star was born.  The original vid racked up over 2 million views.  And here we are on Monday and Rebecca is still a trending topicon Twitter.

The web was flooded with earnest acoustic covers, remade music videos and all sorts of remixes.

Certainly it would be remiss of me to not provide at least a glimpse into all the fervor for those who didn't get their Rebecca Black fill over the weekend.  So I've put together a round-up of some of the best and most bizarre "Friday" covers.

But then I think it's time to lay this one to rest.  I was even inspired to write some parody lyrics of my own for a song called "Monday"…

It's Monday…  Monday…  I don't give a fuck on Monday…
Everybody's lookin' forward to the next thing… next thing…

Animated Album Covers

Animated Albums is a Tumblr blog that delivers exactly what it promises: classic album covers spiced up with some GIF animation.

Why do we need this?

FU!  That's why!

Beatles Covers Might Sound Better Remastered

Posted by: Chris Lesinski | September 11, 2009 at 6:00PM

On Wednesday, EMI reissued The Beatles' entire catalog of music. It's been through a remastering process four years in the making. Since then, the internet has spread pirated versions of the music everywhere. I found one and posted it here. Press play, close your eyes and enjoy this new digital stereo mix of "Let it Be." I'm especially impressed by the peak limiting.

"Let it Be" is so frequently covered that most bands assume even a botched version will make the audience cry. This Russian made us cry for a different reason.

The next way for EMI to milk the Beatles for cash: A Beatles cover of this cover.

Pop Songs Arranged for an Orchestra

Posted by: Chris Lesinski | June 25, 2009 at 3:22PM

You know what might make a Kenny Chesney song even better? If it were arranged for a 100-piece orchestra. And that's excatly what one YouTube-er is doing at ForOrchestra.com. From the site:

Lady Gaga?s music has all the elements of a perfect Orchestral arrangement. The strong dance ?four on the floor? beat, memorable melody, synth lines, and more made it a successful arrangement.

It's good, but the brass fanfare interlude didn't sit well with me, though it's very Beethovenian. And I don't think the "ma ma ma ma's" have as much tremolo as they did when they were auto-tuned.

Here's an orchestral version of Weezer's "Pork and Beans," making it a YouTube remix of a video that already remixed YouTube.
