Ars Technica ran an interesting story yesterday entitled: "100 years of Big Content fearing technology?in its own words."
The article discusses how the fear that copyright holders have over new technology is nothing new. Digital piracy via the web might be the latest wave of technophobia sending the entertainment industry crying to Congress about massive losses from stolen revenues, but as the author points out, back at the turn of the previous century, composers derided the gramophone, arguing that recorded music could stand to harm the business of live performances. Ridiculous, right?
The article concludes that though copyright holders have some honest beef that new technology is costing them money, at the same time, the eventual monetization of these technologies has led to new opportunities to make big bucks.
For example, take this blog. A few years ago, the powers that be would have been reluctant to give away clips of a television show on the Internet like the ones you see in the player at the top of this page. But we've found a way to "monetize" those clips.
You see the advertisements above that video player? Every time you glance at those advertisements, the impression it makes on you is worth a fraction of a cent. You add up all those fractions of cents and you get whole cents: maybe as many as a couple dollars worth.
Those dollars in turn pay my salary and allow me to live a sad existence surviving in low rent housing feasting on dinners of ramen and my own tears.
That's called "monetizing a website!"
So, as you can see, content owners and providers have nothing to fear as long as we're willing to accept that our lives will be pathetic-at-best.
God bless, DVR.
