Profile Redesign Fail

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | December 9, 2010 at 2:00PM

Facebook will try to tell you that if you don't like the new look of your Facebook profile page, it's because you are resistant to change.

But sometimes change is dumb.

Case in point, I knew all along automatically putting recently tagged photos at the very top of people's profiles was a recipe for disaster.  A friend could tag you in literally any photo they want and — POOF! — like magic it'll just pop up at the top of your profile.

As you can see above, it didn't take Redditor mrmojorisingi long to realize the repercussions of this change and immediately troll/hack the photostream on the top of one of his friend's profiles.

Wait…  This photo of my balls is finally done uploading to Facebook.  BRB.  Off to tag everyone I know in it…

The Day We Were Twitter Gods

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | May 11, 2010 at 11:00AM

For one brief moment, Twitter users had found the key: the way to make anyone on Twitter follow them whether they liked it or not.

As Mashable reported yesterday, users could get anyone to follow them by tweeting the word "accept" and the username of the account they wanted to be following them.

Conan O'Brien's account suddenly jumped from 1 follower to nearly 200, causing him to send out the tweet above.  Ha!  That Conan…  So jolly for an unemployed guy… (unlike my dad).

Needless to say this bug was the "roofies" of social media: Sure you could get people to follow you, but you didn't feel good about it the next morning.  And eventually you all knew you'd get caught… which is what happened.

Twitter reports they have fixed the bug and are rolling back all the accounts that exploited it.  I guess it's for the best.  Justin Bieber probably didn't want to be following me anyway.  Probably…

Sears Website Gets an Unwanted Adjustment

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | August 21, 2009 at 2:00PM

0820_sears_site

As if Sears didn't have enough bad publicity by being Sears, yesterday word quickly spreadthat someone had "hacked" Sears's website, placing the above Kenmore Gas Grill into a new "Grills to Cook Babies and More -> Body Part Roaster" department.

I put the term "hacked" in quotes because this wasn't your typical Wayne's Worldrerouting-satellite-signals-to-a-limousine hack job.  Turns out some very simple vulnerabilities with the Sears site made it so that anyone with a sick mind and a little computer knowledge could have executed this newsworthy defacing.

Poor, Sears.  Still stuck in the 1950s.  Apparently they have an entire warehouse dedicated to storing the one computer they use to run their website.  The Sears repairman was up all night replacing punch cards to fix the problem.

As if things couldn't get any worse, Sears tried to censor news of their online errors and has since unleashed the furry of the Reddit online community.

I think it was worth it just to get this gem (see it after the jump)…
