NES Is All Grown Up

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | March 9, 2011 at 4:00PM

I probably spent about half my childhood blowing into Nintendo games.  Once your machine reached a certain age, that was the only surefire way to get it to work.

Then I reached a certain age, discovered alcohol, and my childhood days ended.

Well, now someone over at Andy's Electronics Projects (Andy, maybe?) has combined the best of both worlds: a game called DrunkenNES that uses a breathalyzer stuck in an old NES cartridge to create a playable NES drinking game.

You blow in the cartridge just like old times and the game tosses your name up on an 8-bit leaderboard.

Not sure how you "beat" a game where the drunkest person wins.  Death by alcohol poisoning?

Regardless, as cool as this is, the hardest NES drinking game will always be when you drunkenly tell your buddies you can TKO Mike Tyson in the second round of Punch-Out!! and then they force you to prove it.

I can do it, I swear.  I've just drank way too many High Lifes.

Super Mario Bros. Turns 25

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | September 13, 2010 at 12:00PM

The game Super Mario Bros. was first released in Japan on this day in 1985.

To commemorate, check out the above video providing a visual tour of the much of the Super Mario catalog.

I can't believe I've spent 25 years of my life hanging out with an Italian plumber with a severe mushroom addiction who loves stomping on the head of every creature he sees.

I could have been playing Super Mario Bros. games that entire time instead.

Alright, I gotta run and get this bag of mushrooms to my Italian plumber friend, Gino, otherwise he will stomp me on my head.  What an asshole.

Mario Shows His Skills

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | August 30, 2010 at 2:00PM

I can't believe I've never seen this before.  Remember when Daniel recreated Level 1-1 of Super Mario Bros.?

Well, someone took the original video of the guy who broke his arm trying to climb some homemade crate-stairs Mario-style and animated Mario in there.  Genius.

It's kind of like Mario doing his take on our "I'm better than you, na-na na-na boo-boo, stick your head in doo-doo."  You show that broken-boned loser, Mario.

Hey, cat!  You suck at Duck Hunt!

Get a real job!

However, I gotta say, this is the first time in my 24 years of seeing this game where the dog laughing actually makes sense.

Google's Pac-Man Is Lame!

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | May 21, 2010 at 3:00PM

Google got quite a buzz going today by creating a playable version of Pac-Man in the shape of their logo on the top of their search page.  The stunt celebrates the 30th birthday of Pac-Man.

Alright, Google.  We get it.  You're awesome.

Not to be outdone though, I'm trying to pull together a little stunt of our own for the Tosh.0 website!

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the classic, never-officially-released-in-the-United-States puzzle game, Flappy, I am in negotiations with dB-SOFT to get a Flappy level in the shape of the Tosh.0 logo!

It may or may not look something like this:

I'd like to see someone out there top Flappy!  It can't be done, son!

Jeff Feagles Ends the Tecmo Super Bowl Era

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | May 3, 2010 at 2:00PM

Tecmo Super Bowl could be the greatest sports video game ever.  When it was released in 1991, it was miles ahead of all the inferior football games out there on pretty much every level, including having full rosters for every team in the NFL.

The game made legends out players like Bo Jackson and the infamous QB Eagles.

Well, add Jeff Feagles to the list of notables.  With his retirement this past Friday, he becomes the last player from the original version of Tecmo Super Bowl on NES to leave the NFL.

Feagles, a punter who has played for an estimated 31 teams over the course of his 72 years as a player, retired at the age of 106.  (Or at least that's how it feels to me.)

But I don't think Feagles should give up quite yet.  Has anyone tried blowing on him?  Maybe working him over with a q-tip?  Try jiggling him a little bit and then tapping his reset button a few times.

I think we can get one more game out of him.

This Can't Be Legal, But It Can Be Awesome: The Video Game

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | April 28, 2010 at 11:00AM

Most retro crap on the Internet is garbage: It's like, here's a T shirt with some character from Mr. Belvedere on it that you don't even remember LOL!

Retro for the sake of retro is lame.  If you're gonna talk retro, bring something new into the mix …which is why Super Mario Crossover is so sweet.

The idea is simple: Play the original Super Mario Bros. with a selection of other NES classic characters.  There's Samus from Metroid, Link, Mario himself, Mega Man, Simon from Castlevania, and the dude from Contra who's name no one knows or cares about.

What makes it interesting is that each character retains their signature moves from their own games.  For some characters it's a bitch: Like Samus is too tall to squat down and shoot at Goombas.  I've gained a lot of respect for all the hard work Mario and Luigi have done over the years.

It might not be the most fun you've ever had, but it is interesting, and will remind you why Link is such a pussy.  Give the game a try here before any of the multiple copyright holders who's rights are being infringed upon file a complaint.

'Dark Side of the Moon' Goes 8-Bit

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | March 31, 2010 at 2:00PM

Finally, someone has taken the classic Pink Floyd record Dark Side of the Moon and rendered it into NES sounding 8-bit, thus answering the long-standing question "Would Zelda II: The Adventure of Link been less disappointing if it had Dark Side of the Moon for a soundtrack?"

The answer: Nothing could have made The Adventure of Link less disappointing.

You can hear the whole album turned NES style starting with "Speak to Me" here, but I've given you "Great Gig in the Sky" above because I've always wondered what a soul singer wailing at the top of her lungs would sound like in 8-bit.  Apparently, it sounds like a lost level of Castlevania.

Unexpectedly, "Any Colour You Like" reminded me more of Double Dragon (or maybe I'm thinking of Ninja Gaiden?  It's been awhile since I dusted off the old NES for any reason other than Punch Out.)

Let's End All the Debate

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | December 30, 2009 at 11:05AM

A (mildly) hot topic of conversation on Reddit yesterday was jumping over the flagpole in the original Super Mario Bros. video game for the much heralded Nintendo Entertainment System.

2010 will mark the 25th anniversary of the release of Super Mario, so let's just put this debate to rest.

You can jump over the flagpole in the game… and once again the Internet comes to the rescue with the above video of the incident.

And to think, some people blame the economy on the 10% unemployment rate.  Now all you people who have been trying to figure this out for the past 24 years can go get an f'ing job!
