Has Old Navy Lost Its Mind?

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | March 1, 2011 at 4:00PM

We're used to Old Navy having terrible commercials.  Their latest offering — an ad to sell "Ankle Jeans" — is no different.  You might have seen it recently on TV like I did.

But something strange caught my attention about 5 seconds in…  An icon pops up in the corner suggesting that you "Shazam NOW."

So wait…  Old Navy wants me to Shazam the JINGLE to the ANKLE JEAN COMMERCIAL???

I mean, yes, the song is awesome, but do I really need it on my iPod for non-stop brainwashing?

Well, I've done what I hope no one else dared do.  I did Shazam the ankle jeans commercial.  Here's what I found:

"The Ankle Show"
by Cherrie And The Stems
Album: The Ankle Show
Genre: Ankle Jeans
Label: Old Navy Records

First, kudos to Old Navy Records for not charging me for this song from my new favorite music genre: Ankle Jeans.  One can only wonder who the next great Ankle Jean artist will be.

So next time you see me walking down the street, listening to my iPod, bobbing my head, know that I am listening to my new favorite song–

Ew.  No.  Not "The Ankle Show"!  That is so last week.

I've recently downloaded "$5 Footlong"…  A song from my even newer favorite genre: Sandwiches.

Thom Yorke Keeps Dancing

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | February 22, 2011 at 4:00PM

Last week, Radiohead unleashed the video for their new single "Lotus Flower."  It got a lot of attention, not so much for the music, but for Thom Yorke's bizarre dance moves.

Tons of parody versions have emerged, mostly just showing the video with new music like "Surfin' Bird" or "Single Ladies" (click at your own risk).

But the best I've seen so far is the one above.  It really gets to the heart of what's happening when you take the music away: Thom is trolling us, just acting like a moron.

"Oh, all you assholes want to pay what you want for music?  Well screw you.  How 'bout I dance like a stupid monkey for you?  You happy now??  Yeah, I didn't think so."

Flaming Lips Mix Music, Smartphones, Probably Drugs

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | February 15, 2011 at 11:00AM

Following in the footsteps of previous projects such as their Parking Lot Experiments (which required music to simultaneously blare from numerous car stereos) and their album Zaireeka (which was packaged as four CDs that needed to be played simultaneously from 4 CD players and "mixed" by the listener), alt-rock elder statesmen The Flaming Lips yesterday released a new tune called "Two Blobs Fucking" that requires listeners to simultaneously play 12 YouTube videos at the same time — preferably on 12 different smartphones.

You can watch their "instructional video" above and if you click through, you can find links to all 12 tracks.

Unfortunately, what I can't help you find are the drugs required to enjoy the song or a hairstylist that can help you recreate Wayne Coyne's beautiful gray locks.

Also difficult, finding 12 Flaming Lips fans with smartphones.  Typically, I'd categorize their fans as too-old-to-be-hip-to-the-latest-technology, too-high-to-know-where-their-phones-currently-are or "vagrants."

"I'm Gipper" Is Climbing the iTunes' Charts!

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | January 26, 2011 at 2:00PM

How far can we send Optimo's single, "I'm Gipper"?

When I first checked the iTunes Top Songs chart this morning, Optimo had already taken down a number of musical titans…

As you can see above, Optimo was sitting right atop none other than the King of Pop himself, Michael f'ing Jackson.

And what was right below that?  Oh, just a little song called "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey.

And "I'm Gipper" is still climbing the charts.  As I type this, the song has reached its highest position yet — #103 — not just passing Ke$ha, but also a number of other bona fide hit songs like Lady GaGa's "Poker Face" and the Justin Bieber & Ludacris smash hit, "Baby."

Let's achieve our goal of pushing the song all the way to the top: #1 in the world!

For mere pocket change (99¢), you can change history!  (Kind of.)

Use this link to buy the song on iTunes — http://bit.ly/h4D4H5 — and feel free to watch the music video to keep you pumped while you're waiting for your purchase to download.

Rename This Video Vote

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | January 18, 2011 at 12:00PM

Last Friday, we showed you "Cactus Boogie" and asked you to give us a better title.

We picked five of our favorites and now it's your chance to vote on a winner.

Vote below! Then check back this Friday for the results and a new video.

Rename This Video

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | January 14, 2011 at 6:00PM

This video is called "Cactus Boogie."  Yes.  It's a man playing a cactus.

Think you got a funnier name for this video? Let us know in the comments! Then check back on Tuesday at noon for the vote off!

The winner of last week's Rename This Video vote in a tight race determined by a mere 3.5% of the vote was Kashmir with the title, "Bieber finally hits puberty."  It's funny because when Bieber gets older, like all child stars, his life is going to be so painful he will envy those child stars who have died before him!  Congratulations, Kashmir!

Antoine Dodson Goes Christmas

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | December 22, 2010 at 12:00PM

You may have thought you had everything you needed for Christmas this year, but Lopez Tonight felt otherwise.  So last night they had Antoine Dodson perform a Christmas version of the "Bed Intruder Song" called "Chimney Intruder."

Apparently, what's really getting raped up in here is the meaning of Christmas.

Seeing "Chimney Intruder" makes me think Dodson might be in need of a Web Redemption… and luckily he's getting one when Tosh.0 returns on Tuesday, January 11th!

I have a suggested "Extended Interview" question for Mr. Dodson: "Why??????"

A Christmas Classic Remake

Posted by: Mike Pomranz | December 13, 2010 at 2:00PM

As I have stated on many, many occasions, there are only two good Christmas songs: Bing Crosby & David Bowie's duet of "The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth" and Run DMC's "Christmas in Hollis."

So I was extremely excited to see that Funny or Die has released the video above: a nearly shot-for-shot line-for-line remake of the original Crosby & Bowie video for "Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth" with John C. Reilly as Bing Crosby and Will Ferrell as David Bowie.

You really can't appreciate how well done this is without first seeing the original, so make sure to check that out if you aren't already familiar.

Now, we just need to get them to do a shot-for-shot line-for-line remake of the video for "Christmas in Hollis" with Reilly as Run, Ferrell as DMC and I'm thinking Chris Kattan looks a lot like the bad little elf.  He'd just have to wear slightly more makeup than usual.
